The imposing gate of the towers beholds strange graffiti. In 1970, Canon Tonnelier attributed them to the Order of the Temple. According to him, 70 Templars were locked up there and engraved the testimony of the end of their history. Since then, many visitors have been able to appreciate them and wonder about the presence of the Templars in Domme. In 2018, during a restoration campaign, a new study of the engravings was commissioned, which states that the theses of Canon Tonnelier cannot be retained that it is probably “…a waiting room, or even a room for idleness…” that “…the aesthetic dimension must not be neglected…” and that “… some graffiti can also be purely free…”. Today everyone is unanimous, these graffiti remain an exceptional ensemble.
